This festival is celebrated on the fourth day of the month of Bhadrapad (August – September) as a birthday of Lord Ganesh. Once, Parvati was taking bath, so she created a human figure from a thick oily substance and gave him life. She asked him to guard the door till she bathed. At that very moment Lord Shiva decided to meet Parvati but he was stopped by the boy created by Parvati. Lord Shiva’s anger reached to the flash point and he destroyed him. When Lord Shiva came to know that this was the creation of Patrvati, he placed the head of an elephant on that Parvati’s creation. This elephant-headed God was welcomed and worshipped by all.

Siddhi Vinayak is a name of Ganesh in which he stands on a demon named Vighnasura. This form of Lord Ganesh is worshipped on the day of Ganesh Chaturthi. The Prasadam of Modak is offered to Lord Ganesh.

In this festival each locality makes a Pandal and performs his own celebration. Priest performs the daily Puja of Lord Ganesha by chating the Vedic Matras. Aarti is performed twice a day. Some people install the deity of Lord Ganesh at their home and perform their separate Pooja. They sing hymns and devotional songs. It is said that Lord Ganesh loves Modak very much. Some people observe fast on these days. Thus, Ganesh Chauth is celebrated in this country with great enthusiasm.
