Ramnavmi is celebrated on the 9th day of the bright fortnight of the month of Chaitra (March – April). Ram was the incarnation of Lord Vishnu and his glories and might were unlimited. He was the protector of God’s devotees. His father’s name was Dashrath and he had three brothers, namely Bharat, Lakshman and Shatrughan. Ram was very soft spoken and never uttered any harsh word even when someone provoked him. His wife name was Sita who was the incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi. Lord Ram was the prince of Ikshvaku race.

When Dashrath decided to hand over the royal throne to Ram he was not much pleased. As per the wish of Kaikeyee when Dashrath asked him to go to forest for fourteen years he did not lamented for that agony. Even he gave the reins of kingdom in the hands of Bharat and went to the forest with his wife Sita and brother Lakshman. In forest his wife was taken away by mighty king of Lanka, Ravan. Though he alone was able to defeat Ravan but he accepted the services of Shree Hanuman and other powerful monkeys to vanquish Ravan. He defeated Ravan and brought back Sita to Ayodhya.

Ramnavmi is celebrated across the country by Hindus with great enthusiasm. People perform fasting and eat only fasting food after Shree Ram’s birth. This festival is having a great importance. In temples the deity of Shree Ram is decorated with flowers and people recite Vedic hymns and also sing devotional songs. Some people perform the Akhand Paath of Ramcharitmanas and offer their obeisance unto the lotus feet of Ram.
