Narsinha is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Long ago there lived a demon king whose name was Hiranyakashyap. He had a loving son whose name was Prahlad. When Prahlad became grown up, his father sent him to the Gurukul to learn various arts.
Prahlad was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. So, when the teacher started teaching him the various subjects, Prahlad was not much interested in learning the profane knowledge. Instead of that he preferred to chant the holy name of God. When this news reached to his father, he became extremely furious. First he tried very patiently to convince Prahlad that being a demon he should not worship Vishnu but all his efforts had gone in vein. Then Hirnakashyap asked his ministers to give him a strict lesson.
As time flew the devotion of Prahalad became more intense. Seeing the gravity of the situation Hirnakashyap harassed him a lot and finally decided to remove him from his way. At that very moment Bhagwan Narsinha appeared in front of Hirnyakashyap and vanquished him. He sent him to his own abode. At that time Bhagwan Narsinha was looking very angry but when Prahlad went near the Lord he immediately cooled down. The reins of the kingdom were given to Prahlad and Narsinha Bhagwan gave him boon and blessings.
At that very moment the demigods appeared there and worshipped Lord Narsinha. That day is celebrated as a festival with great religious fervor.
