This festival is celebrated in the month of Ashadh and Shravan i.e. July – August. This is the month when clouds play hide-and-seek with sun and rain and the fragrance of flowers wafts in the air to make the climate more pleasant. The temples of India are decorated with leaves and flowers. In these days the spirituality floats in the air. The Chalit Vigrah of Bhagwan moves across the towns and cities. People take the advantage of Lord’s Darshan. Lord is placed in the Hindola and the Hindola sways in the air. The saints of high repute move with the chariot of Lord and recite Vedic hymns and sing devotional songs. The surrounding area is encompassed by the perfume of incense sticks.
This festival was started many moons ago in Vrindavan when Gopis were making swings to rock the Lord in Hindola. This festival is especially celebrated by devotees of Vaishnav Sampradaya. The followers of Swaminarayan sect also celebrate this festival with great enthusiasm and fervor. Once a devotee placed the deity of Lord Swaminarayan in swing and started worshipping him then Lord himself appeared in many forms and gave Darshan to that devotee. Nowadays this festival is celebrated in all temples of Swaminarayan. Devotees make Hindola by the help of vegetables, flowers, fruits etc.
