Festivals >Dhanurmas

This festival is celebrated when the sun enters the Dhanur Rashi (Sagitarius). In this month people offer food to Brahmins and devotees. They pass their maximum time in reading scriptures and by celebrating Van Mahotsav. The Vedic rituals are performed. Idols are decorated and the Mantras of Veda and Upanishads are recited. Moong Halwa and sweets of milk are prepared at the time of sunrise and offer to God as an ambrosia. Rig Veda in east, Atharva Veda in the north, Yajur Veda in the south and Sam Veda in the west are kept for recitations. Ramayan and Mahabharat are kept in the south-east direction, Stotras in the south-west, Dharma Shastra in the north-west and poetic literatures are kept in north-east direction. Magshar month is a Satvik month, hence it is the month of demigods.

At the time of creation Lord Brahma appeared from the navel of Vishnu and started chanting the shlokas of Vedas. Brahma was overwhelmed with ego and forgot the Lord. At the same time two demons appeared from the ears of Vishnu and started fighting with Lord. This fight lasted for long time and finally they were defeated. They asked Vishnu to send them in the divine abode On the day of Dhanurmas Vishnu opened the north door and sent them to Vaikunth.. During Dhanurmas the Lord takes bath from the water collected in nine water pots. Thus this festival is celebrated with great spiritual fervor.
