The story of Puran goes like this. When Lord Vishnu was pleased on Bali he asked Bali to take a boon from him. Bali said that he wants Lord Vishnu to be his Dwarpal. Vishnu agreed for that, but when Lakshmiji came to know about this she became upset. Lakshmiji went to Bali and asked to be her brother. Bali agreed and in return he said to fulfill any demand of Lakshmiji. Lakshmiji asked him to relieve Lord Vishnu from the duty of Dwarpal and thus Vishnu returned back to his abode.
This festival is celebrated in India with great enthusiasm and zeal. Behind this festival there is a story that goes like this. In a remote village a family was living with mother, daughter and son. When daughter grew up she got married and went to a distant place. At that time his brother was a child, but when he grew up he asked to his mother about his sister’s whereabouts. His mother told him the place where she was staying. In next to no time, the brother set out his journey to meet his sister. While going, many hurdles and problems came on the way, but anyhow he reached to her house. Sister welcomed her brother and while returning she accompanied him and saved her brothers from problems and curse of evil spirits. Thus, a custom has been started that sister should go to her brother’s place on the day of Bhabeej and perform the Pooja for his safety.
In India this festival is celebrated with great spiritual feelings. On this very day sisters offer sweets, coconut to her brothers and put Tilak on their foreheads. Thus, Puja is performed and celebration goes on for the whole day.
